The Wounded Healer

During college, I first encountered The Wounded Healer by Henri Nouwen. My program director — Dr. Carl Strutt — put it on the reading list for one of his classes. At the time, I didn’t fully connect with it. Despite my relative poverty growing up in a broken family, I didn’t really understand “wounded-ness” per se. Other than the death of my grandfather when I was in Grade 3, I had never experienced anything that “grieved” me. But as the years went by, I found myself returning to the ideas in Nouwen’s book, especially as I experienced struggles of my own and walked alongside others in theirs. I began to understand the power in acknowledging our own pain and the way it allows us to empathize deeply with those who are hurting. Now, I have come to appreciate The Wounded Healer as a valuable perspective on how God’s love works through us, especially in our weaknesses.

In his account of Jesus’ suffering, John shows us how Christ embodied this idea of the wounded healer in its fullest form. Jesus wasn’t only a wounded healer; He became the very suffering that would ultimately redeem. On the cross, bearing the agony of the physical, emotional, and spiritual wounds inflicted on Him, He extended Himself entirely to meet our deepest needs for healing. The wounds of Christ were no minor affliction; they were wounds that reached to the depths of His being, and by them, we are healed (Isaiah 53:5). Jesus took on the ultimate brokenness to bring us wholeness.

In Nouwen’s language, we might say that Jesus embraced the full weight of human suffering, making His brokenness a bridge of healing for us. Just as Jesus bore the punishment we deserved, we can follow Him by recognizing that our own wounds, while painful, can also be avenues of compassion. Instead of masking our brokenness, we can choose to allow God to work through it to reach others.

So if today finds you carrying wounds — whether from past hurts, recent disappointments, or anything in between — consider how God might be inviting you to use those places of pain to bring comfort to others. Christ took on wounds for us, and He invites us to participate in His ministry by reaching out to others, not in spite of our wounds, but through them.

My Will Be Done, or Thy Will Be Done?

In John 12:37-50, we find Jesus quoting Isaiah 6:10, a passage where God says He will “blind their eyes and harden their hearts” so that they will not understand or turn to Him. On first glance, it sounds as though God is actively working to prevent people from believing. But as we dig deeper, a richer perspective emerges—one where human freedom and God’s sovereign plan are in a perfect, if mysterious, harmony.

I firmly believe all things happen under God’s design, but this doesn’t mean God coerces every choice or action. Instead, God knows every possible outcome—all the ways a free creature might respond in any given circumstance. He orchestrates the world in such a way that His purposes are fulfilled, but human choices are genuinely free. This view helps us understand Jesus’ reference to Isaiah. The passage wasn’t about God “forcing” people to resist belief. Rather, it was about His awareness of their hearts and how His message would be received given their predispositions.

See, in Isaiah, the people’s blindness wasn’t manufactured by God; it was the result of a longstanding resistance to His message. By the time Jesus was teaching, the religious leaders and many others had spent years ignoring God’s call to genuine worship and repentance. Jesus’ use of Isaiah’s words acknowledges that these people would continue to resist, not because God forced them to but because they chose to close their hearts. God’s sovereignty allowed Him to use even their resistance to further His plans.

We might think of it like this: God’s will is broad enough to encompass both the willing and the unwilling, the faithful and the resistant. When someone continually resists, God may allow them to experience the consequences of their choice, but that choice is theirs. It is this deep respect for freedom that underscores the entire message of Jesus in the Gospels. He offers salvation, but He doesn’t coerce it.

Jesus’ example shows us how divine sovereignty and human freedom work together. Every time we choose to follow Him, we participate in God’s grand design, bringing His purposes to fruition in the world. The key difference lies in whose will we are choosing to follow. Will it be our will, with all its limitations and potential missteps, or will it be His will, which is perfect and ultimately fulfilling?

The question, “My will be done, or Thy will be done?” is one we face every day. Like those who encountered Jesus, we each have the choice to turn toward God and align with His purposes, allowing Him to work through us. Though we’re free to choose otherwise, God’s invitation remains open—a gracious reminder that His will is always toward life, restoration, and purpose.

Forgiven Little, Loving Less: Why You Might Be Missing the Full Picture

In Luke 7:36-50, we find the story of a sinful woman who interrupts a dinner at the house of a Pharisee named Simon. She falls at the feet of Jesus, weeping, and pours expensive perfume on His feet, wiping them with her hair. Simon is shocked that Jesus would allow this woman, known for her sinful reputation, to touch Him. But Jesus uses this moment to teach a profound lesson about forgiveness and love.

Jesus tells a parable about two debtors: one who owes a large debt and another who owes a smaller one. Both debts are forgiven, and Jesus asks Simon which of the two will love the creditor more. Simon answers that it is the one who had the larger debt forgiven. Jesus agrees and says to Simon, “He who is forgiven little, loves little” (Luke 7:47).

This story illustrates an important truth about sin, forgiveness, and love. The woman’s extravagant love for Jesus stems from her awareness of the great debt she owed—her sins were many, and her forgiveness was much. But Simon, who saw himself as righteous, believed he owed little to Jesus. His view of sin was small, and as a result, his love for Jesus was shallow.

A Theology of Sin

At its core, sin is not just bad behavior; it is a rebellion against God, a failure to meet His standard of holiness (Romans 3:23). All of us are born into this state, separated from God (Ephesians 2:1-3). Sin is more than just breaking moral rules—it is the rejection of God’s authority, resulting in both personal and cosmic consequences.

Throughout the Bible, we see the seriousness of sin:

  • Isaiah 59:2 explains that sin creates a barrier between us and God, cutting off our relationship with Him.
  • Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death—spiritual separation from God that leads to eternal separation unless reconciled through Christ.
  • James 2:10 reminds us that even if we fail in just one part of the law, we are guilty of breaking all of it.

The Bible’s portrayal of sin makes it clear that every human being is in a state of great need—each of us is a debtor to God. Sin isn’t a small misstep; it’s a complete severance of our relationship with God, one that can only be restored through the grace extended in Christ. Without this understanding, we are likely to minimize the gift of forgiveness that God offers.

A Small View of Sin Leads to a Small Love for God

Jesus’ point to Simon—and to us—is that the way we view our sin directly impacts how we relate to God. When we minimize sin, we minimize the need for God’s grace. This results in a shallow, distant relationship with Him. If we think our sin is small, we’ll see Jesus as little more than a moral teacher or good example. But if we understand the depth of our need, we will respond with deep gratitude, just as the woman in Luke 7 did.

The truth is, we all owe a great debt—whether we realize it or not. The woman in this story knew her need for forgiveness, and her love for Jesus reflected her awareness of how much she had been forgiven. Simon, in contrast, saw no great need for forgiveness and, consequently, showed little love.

Why This is Good News

Here’s the beauty of this story: Jesus doesn’t rebuke the woman for her past or even for the nature of her sins. Instead, He honors her act of love and forgives her because of her faith. This tells us that no matter how great our sin, God’s forgiveness is greater. But it also serves as a reminder that if we don’t fully acknowledge our need for forgiveness, we may miss out on the depth of the relationship God wants to have with us.

The challenge for us today is to ask: How do I view my sin? Do I minimize it, thinking of myself as mostly good and only in need of minor forgiveness? Or do I recognize the profound debt I owe—a debt that Christ paid in full? Those who are forgiven much, love much. And the truth is, we have all been forgiven much. If we fail to see the greatness of God’s grace, it is because we have too small a view of sin.

The great news is that we are not left to bear the weight of our sin. Jesus has already borne it for us. When we understand this, it transforms our relationship with God, just as it did for the woman at the feet of Jesus. The more we grasp the depth of our forgiveness, the more we will love Him in return.

An Unapologetic Apologetic

Today’s reading from Isaiah 63:15-66:24 unveils a profound narrative where God appeals to His people, calling them out of their rebellion and into a relationship with Him. This passage vividly illustrates how God reaches out, not just through spiritual means, but through a comprehensive appeal that encompasses historical, scientific, and logical evidence, all of which testify to His reality and truth.

One common critique against Christianity is the perceived lack of proof. However, Christianity uniquely offers robust evidence across various disciplines. Spiritually, God engages with us through personal experiences and transformations, as seen in the heartfelt plea in Isaiah 63:15: “Look down from heaven and see, from your holy and beautiful habitation. Where are your zeal and your might? The stirring of your inner parts and your compassion are held back from me” (ESV). This verse reflects a deep yearning for God’s presence, a spiritual appeal that resonates with our intrinsic need for divine connection.

Historically, Christianity stands on firm ground. The events recorded in the Bible, particularly in the New Testament, are corroborated by external historical records. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are well-documented events that provide a historical foundation for our faith. The consistency of these records with other historical accounts strengthens the credibility of Christianity’s claims.

Scientifically, the intricacies of creation echo the existence of an intelligent Designer. The order and complexity of the universe, from the fine-tuning of physical constants to the intricacies of biological systems, align with the biblical account of a purposeful creation. Isaiah 66:1-2 says, “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool… All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord” (ESV). These verses remind us that the natural world is a testament to God’s creative power.

Logically, the coherence of the Christian worldview offers the best explanation for the world we see around us. Christianity provides answers to life’s fundamental questions: the origin of the universe, the nature of humanity, the basis for morality, and the hope for the future. Isaiah 65:17-18 speaks of the new heavens and a new earth, a future hope that gives meaning and purpose to our present lives.

Despite these compelling evidences, many still refuse to see God. Isaiah addresses this rebellion, depicting a people who are obstinate and resistant to God’s call. Isaiah 65:2 poignantly states, “All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices” (ESV). This verse captures God’s persistent appeal and humanity’s stubborn rejection.

As we reflect on today’s reading, let us recognize that God’s call is multifaceted. He appeals to us spiritually, historically, scientifically, and logically, providing ample evidence of His existence and love. May we not be like the rebellious people described in Isaiah, but rather, may we open our hearts and minds to the overwhelming evidence of God’s reality and respond to His call with faith and obedience. In doing so, we embrace an unapologetic apologetic, confidently and assertively proclaiming the truth of our faith.

Sound and Fury Signifying Nothing

In Isaiah 58, the prophet addresses a people who are outwardly religious but whose hearts are far from God. They fast and engage in rituals, yet their actions are marred by injustice and a lack of compassion. The text reveals a profound disconnect between their religious observances and their daily behavior. Despite their fervent practices, their true spiritual state is revealed by their exploitation of others and their failure to address the needs of the oppressed.

Isaiah 58:1-5 portrays a scene where the people question why God seems indifferent to their fasting and religious acts. They are perplexed that their piety is not met with divine favor. The answer comes through a scathing critique of their hypocrisy: “Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?” (Isaiah 58:5, NIV). God is not interested in mere ritualistic displays of devotion; He desires a genuine transformation of the heart that manifests in justice, mercy, and love.

This critique resonates deeply with Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13, where he asserts that without love, all our spiritual gifts and efforts are meaningless: “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal” (1 Corinthians 13:1, NIV). Paul’s vivid imagery underscores the futility of spiritual achievements devoid of love. Just as Isaiah condemns the empty rituals of the Israelites, Paul warns against the emptiness of religious acts performed without love.

Both passages challenge us to examine the authenticity of our faith. Are our religious practices a mere facade, or do they reflect a heart transformed by God’s love? In Isaiah, God calls for a fast that loosens the chains of injustice and feeds the hungry. Similarly, Paul calls for a love that surpasses all spiritual gifts, emphasizing that genuine love is the essence of true spirituality.

The phrase “sound and fury signifying nothing” from Shakespeare’s Macbeth echoes the futility of actions that lack genuine substance. If our worship and service are not rooted in love and justice, they are nothing more than hollow noises. True spirituality is not about the grandeur of our actions but the depth of our love and compassion.

As we reflect on Isaiah 58 and 1 Corinthians 13, let us ask ourselves: Are our practices and expressions of faith genuine, or are they empty noise? May our lives be marked not by hollow rituals but by a profound love that transforms our relationships and the world around us.

The Angry God?

As I read through Isaiah today, I was struck by the profound transformation in the relationship between God and His people. The manifestation of God’s anger is pivotal in this shift. Throughout the Old Testament, we see God’s anger depicted as wrath and judgement, yet still aiming to guide His people back to righteousness. However, these chapters of Isaiah reveal a promise of change: God’s wrath will no longer be as it once was, thanks to the redemptive work of the Suffering Servant — Jesus Christ.

God’s oft-maligned anger — on display throughout the Old Testament — represents His holy and just reaction to humanity’s sinfulness and rebellion. In Isaiah 54:7-8, His anger is portrayed as a necessary response to Israel’s relentless unfaithfulness… but the thing so often missed (or misunderstood by the Lord many critics) is that this anger was not an end in itself but a means to restore a broken relationship but demonstrating the consequences of rebellion and lack of trust.

Now, back to the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53 who bears the sins of many and intercedes for transgressors. This Servant takes upon Himself the punishment for sin, satisfying the requirements of God’s justice. “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). This sacrificial act — in which Jesus has absorbed the wrath due for sin — dramatically changes our relationship with God. In Isaiah 54:9-10, He promises that His anger will not be directed toward His people anymore, much like the promise He made after the great flood.

God’s wrath is now reserved for the final judgment at the end of the age, rather than being meted out in the sort of ad-hoc fashion of the Old Testament. The discipline and correction of God remain, guiding believers towards righteousness via the indwelling Holy Spirit because we have moved from the rule of law to the rule of grace.

Whom Shall I Fear

The passage from Isaiah 48:12-52:12 spans God’s assurance of His unchanging nature, His promise of redemption, and the Servant’s role in bringing salvation. Throughout these chapters, the underlying message is clear: God’s power and judgment are eternal, while human opinions and actions are fleeting.

Isaiah 48:12-13 emphasizes God’s eternal sovereignty: “Listen to me, Jacob, Israel, whom I have called: I am he; I am the first and I am the last. My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up together.” Here, God reminds Israel of His unmatched authority and power, contrasting it with the temporal nature of human influence.

The futility of fearing man becomes evident in the broader narrative. Human leaders and their judgments are transient. Their opinions, no matter how daunting they may seem, will pass away. Isaiah 51:12-13 captures this sentiment: “I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass, that you forget the Lord your Maker, who stretches out the heavens and who lays the foundations of the earth, that you live in constant terror every day because of the wrath of the oppressor, who is bent on destruction?” The text reassures us that fearing people, who are as transient as grass, distracts us from the eternal reality of God’s power and judgment.

In today’s world, we often face the temptation to fear the reprisals of men. Consider the pressure to conform to societal norms that conflict with biblical principles. Fear of judgment or rejection can lead us to compromise our values. For instance, in a workplace setting, standing firm in ethical decisions might attract criticism or even jeopardize one’s job. Yet, the opinions of colleagues and superiors, however intimidating, will not last. Their judgments die with them, but God’s judgments endure forever.

Another example can be found in social media, where the fear of public opinion can be overwhelming. The desire for likes, approval, and avoiding backlash can drive people to present a curated version of themselves that aligns with popular sentiment rather than truth. Yet, these digital affirmations are ephemeral. God’s view of us, based on truth and righteousness, is what ultimately matters and endures.

Reflecting on Isaiah 48:12-52:12, we are reminded that our ultimate accountability is to God, whose judgments are eternal. While human opinions may change and pass away, God’s word stands forever. It is His approval and His commands that we should seek to honor above all else.

Furnace of Affection

Isaiah 48:10 speaks of God’s refining process, a crucial aspect of His relationship with Israel and His people today. This verse is part of a larger section (Isaiah 44:6-48:11) where God emphasizes His sovereignty, the futility of idols, and His commitment to redeem and refine His people. In these chapters, God declares His uniqueness and sovereignty, contrasting Himself with lifeless idols. He promises deliverance and redemption for Israel but also speaks of the necessary process of refining through trials. This refinement is not just for punishment but for purification and preparation for His purposes.

In Isaiah 48:10, God says, “See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.” This furnace of affliction is actually a furnace of affection. The intense process of refining through affliction is a manifestation of God’s deep love and commitment to His people. By allowing them to go through trials, He is purifying them, removing impurities, and preparing them for a closer relationship with Him.

We see this concept clearly outlined in the New Testament as well. 1 Corinthians 5:5 reads, “hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.” Paul’s instruction to the Corinthian church to hand over an immoral brother (or sister) to Satan for the destruction of the flesh is a form of severe discipline meant to lead to repentance and restoration. This parallels God’s refining process in Isaiah, where severe measures are taken to purify and save His people.

Have you ever experienced personal trials? I know I have. And as we journey through these difficult circumstances — such as a health crisis or financial hardship — we might find that this “furnace of affection” brings about a deeper reliance on God, stripping away self-reliance and pride.

Never forget that God loves you and that’s why His refining process is still at work today! While the process can be painful, it is ultimately for our good, leading to spiritual growth and maturity. God’s desire is that none should perish, but that ALL should come to everlasting life.

An Inexhaustible God

In Isaiah 40:28-31, we are reminded of the vast difference between human strength and God’s inexhaustible power. The prophet Isaiah writes:

Isaiah 40:28-31 (NIV):

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Our human effort, no matter how determined or energetic, is ultimately limited and exhaustible. We grow tired, we get weary, and sometimes we simply cannot continue on our own strength. This is true in many areas of life:

In our careers, we often push ourselves to the brink, believing that success depends entirely on our effort. We stay late at the office, take on more responsibilities than we can handle, and neglect rest. This relentless pursuit can lead to burnout, where our physical and mental reserves are utterly depleted.

In relationships, we might try to be everything for everyone—supportive friend, perfect spouse, attentive parent. We give and give until there’s nothing left, and then wonder why we feel empty and exhausted.

Even in our spiritual lives, we might strive to earn God’s favor through our own efforts. We attend every church event, volunteer for every committee, and try to live up to a standard of perfection that leaves us feeling inadequate and spiritually drained.

In contrast, God’s power and resources are inexhaustible. He never grows tired or weary, and His understanding is beyond our comprehension. When we rely on our own strength, we inevitably fall short. But when we place our hope in the Lord, He renews our strength.

Think about a time when you were at your wit’s end, feeling like you had nothing left to give. Maybe it was during a particularly stressful period at work, a crisis in your family, or a moment of deep personal struggle. Now imagine facing that situation with the assurance that you have access to God’s infinite power and wisdom. How different might that experience have been?

Those who hope in the Lord will find their strength renewed. They will soar on wings like eagles, run and not grow weary, walk and not be faint. This is not a promise of an easy life without challenges, but a guarantee that God’s strength will sustain us through whatever we face.

By looking to God rather than relying solely on ourselves or others, we tap into a source of strength that is limitless. We short-change ourselves when we fail to do this, settling for our own finite resources instead of embracing the infinite power available to us through faith.

The Imperishable Purpose of Our Perishable Possessions

In the narratives of 2 Kings, Isaiah, and 2 Chronicles, we read about a moment in King Hezekiah’s life that serves as a profound lesson for all of us. After recovering from a life-threatening illness through God’s miraculous intervention, Hezekiah proudly shows the envoys from Babylon all the treasures of his kingdom. This act of pride leads to a stark prophecy from Isaiah: everything Hezekiah showed to the Babylonians would one day be taken away, and his descendants would be carried off as captives.

Isaiah 39:6 (NIV):

“The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord.”

Hezekiah’s story reminds us that all our possessions, achievements, and even our lives are temporary and ultimately belong to God. We may take pride in our accomplishments and the material wealth we accumulate, but we must remember that these are merely on loan to us. We are stewards, not owners.

1 Timothy 6:7 (NIV):

“For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”

Since everything we have is temporary, we should focus on using our perishable possessions for imperishable purposes. This means investing our time, resources, and talents in ways that have eternal significance. Rather than hoarding wealth or seeking personal glory, we should strive to further God’s kingdom, help those in need, and live lives that reflect His love and grace.

Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV):

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Hezekiah’s mistake was focusing on earthly wealth and pride rather than acknowledging God’s sovereignty and purpose for his life and kingdom. We are called to live with an eternal perspective, recognizing that our true home is in heaven and that our time on earth is an opportunity to prepare for that eternal life with God. Too often, we strive to be remembered by people who will one day be forgotten, rather than seeking to make an impact that lasts for eternity.

Colossians 3:2 (NIV):

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
